Under-performing councillors urged to relinquish post

MIRI: Under performing councillors and those who think that the post is just another social welfare appointment are urged to make way for more capable persons.

“Miri City Council is not a social club where you can come and go as you like,” said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan.

“A councillor’s appointment is not another welfare job…it is a serious job where you are actually empowered to look after the city and welfare of the people. Your task is to look after the city,” Dr Chan said at installation of new mayor and councillors yesterday.

Lawyer Lawrence Lai was sworn in as the new mayor, with another lawyer and a former magistrate Mohd Chee Kadir, sworn in as his deputy.

Also, 13 new councillors took their oath of office. They were Gilbert Chin Yung Hua, Chong Nyuk Lain, Abau Nawing, Chia Chhau Khiong, Julaihi Mohamad, Mohamad Sardon Zainal, Lila @ Laila Mohamad, Dr Nuing Jeluing, Wendel Crocker, Renggan Belatong, David Tan Thiam Hua, Robert Ayu and Inging Will.

Dr Chan went on to say that Miri’s success and progress would depend very much on the councillors and the city council as a whole.

“You already know your responsibilities and what you have to do although at times you may feel that you are doing a voluntary job and therefore don’t feel like continue doing them. If that is the case, be brave enough to resign so that others more capable can take your place in the council,” he said.

On Miri’s desire to be associated with a resort city status, Dr Chan said the city council and its councillors should think hard of ways to ‘sell’ the city.

They, together with other organisations, can start by holding lively events to make this city vibrant and also to allow the people the opportunity to do business and make more money.

On another subject, Dr Chan praised the formation of the Residents Committees where each councillor was entrusted to look after one.

“This is something that we must be serious about. I don’t think it is right if councillors do not know what is happening in their jurisdiction. With such committee, this will not be the case,” he said.

Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities Datuk Peter Chin, Assistant Minister of Infrastructure Development and Communication Lee Kim Shin, Sibuti MP Ahmad Lai Bujang, Pujut assemblyman Andy Chia, Lambir assemblyman Aidan Wing and Miri Resident Datu Ose Murang were among those present at the swearing-in ceremony.
