Association looking for coach from China

SIBU: Sibu Table Tennis Association (STTA) chairman Dr Clement Cheng hopes to get a China coach to improve the standard of the game here.

He said the Sarawak State Sports Council had verbally promised to look into engaging a China coach for the STTA.

“The Council is already looking into the matter with urgency. Hopefully, we will get the coach as soon as possible,” he added at the opening of the inaugural President’s Commercial Table Tennis Championship here yesterday.

Among the teams taking part are KTS Team A & Team B, WTK, Rimbunan Hijau Team A & Team B and Hongkong & Shanghai Bank.

On coaching, Cheng admitted STTA was facing a long standing problem.

“All our current coaches are either retired players or teachers. If we can get a China coach, we are confident it will be of great help to the STTA,” he said.

Cheng said they would go to China to scout for a coach once they got the green light from the Council.

On the lightning facilities at the stadium, he said it would be further upgraded.

He disclosed STTA president Vincent Lau Lee Ming had agreed to provide funds to improve three of the lightings while he himself would contribute another set.

“A better lighting system will definitely make the venue better for the players,” he said.

On the players’ training schedules at the stadium, Cheng said they would have to adjust their times, effective this month.

“From this month, we will organise our monthly table tennis competition for students. Obviously, it will affect the schedules of those players using our stadium.

“Any inconvenience caused is regrettable and if your timetable is affected, contact STTA members for rearrangements,” he said.
