Good response to Sarikei Open Badminton

SARIKEI: The Sarikei Open Badminton tournament which started here on Friday night, has attracted players from as far as Johor.Sarikei Division Bumiputera Badminton Association (PBBBS) chairman Ahmad Adai who declared open the tournament, viewed this as a positive development for local badminton.
A total of 35 pairs have entered for the men’s doubles open, 14 for the women’s doubles open and 15 teams for the men’s veteran event. A player’s age for the veteran event must not be below 40 and the combined age of a pair must be below 85.
“The association is happy with the overwhelming response, especially from players outside Sarikei. They are among the top players at the divisional or state level,” Ahmad noted.
According to him, Abdul Razak and Mohd Rizal are the players from Johor, Yusri Azmi and Mohazila from Kuching were finalists in the recent Sarawak Closed tournament while Mohd Suffian Sapali and Yusir Azman, also from Kuching, were former Sarawak Sukma players.
They were all the seeded for the tournament, he said, adding that among the local entries were Mohaini and Mohd Najib from Saratok, champions of the last tournament organised by PBBBS. The finals are scheduled for tonight.
Also present at the opening was Sunggom Aji, manager of West Motor, the main sponsor.
