Kedah, Perlis and Johor FC eat humble pie

KUALA LUMPUR: Two group leaders Perlis (Group A) and Johor FC (Group C), and defending champions Kedah were all beaten in their Malaysia Cup ties on Saturday. Perlis’ defeat to KL Plus enabled the Klang Valley team to now lead in Group A while Johor FC, despite their loss, are still leading in Group C based on the goal difference compared to Perak.

Kedah continued their slide following their narrow 0-1 defeat by Penang and are now lying at the bottom of Group E, which will make it difficult for the Canaries to make it to the quarter-finals.

In the Group A match, Perlis lost 1-2 to KL Plus at Stadium Utama.

The homesters drew first blood when Azi Shahril Azmi found the visitors’ net in the 70th minute before Norhafiz Zamani Misbah scored two goals in the 74th and 86th minutes to seal the game 2-1 for KL Plus.

The win enabled KL Plus to amass seven points from three matches compared with six points collected by Perlis.

In Melaka, the homesters had to be contented with sharing a point with Pahang after their game ended in a 3-3 draw.

Melaka’s goals came from Mohd Fauzzi Kassim (in the first and 82nd minutes) and Mohd Hanafiah Abu (19th) while Pahang scored through Mohd Azamudin Md Akil (27th) and Abdul Rahman Abd Kadir (50th and 72nd).

In the Group B match, Negeri Sembilan continued to hold the lead following a narrow 1-0 win over homesters Terengganu at Stadium Sultan Ismail Nasirudin in Kuala Terengganu.

The solitary goal was contributed by Mohd Zaquan Adha Abdul Radzak through a penalty kick in the 28th minute.

In Kuching, Sarawak who drew first blood eventually had to accept defeat when Johor overwhelmed them 4-1 at Stadium Negeri Petra Jaya.

Although Sarawak scored first in the 17th minute through Mohd Hadera Bakri, the visitors were clearly the more superior team.

Johor’s goals came from two penalty kicks in the 29th and 57th minutes taken by Mohd Khairul Ismail and Azrine Affendy Saduddin respectively while Mohd Siful Nizam scored the third goal in the 70th minute and Yosri Dermaraju made it 4-1 in the 71st minute.

In Group D, Sabah registered their first win after three matches when they beat PDRM 2-0 at Tawau Sports Complex.

Sabah’s opening goal came from Zaykiel Leong in the last minute of the first half while Mohd Farid Saibun made it 2-0 in the 86th.

In Alor Setar, Kedah were beaten 0-1 by Penang at Stadium Darul Aman.

The solitary goal came in the 64th minute when Mohd Rafiuddin Roddin converted the free kick. — Bernama
