Villagers voice fear of landslides

MIRI: Villagers at Kampung Lereng Bukit are worried about the possibility of landslides occurring particularly with the coming monsoon season. They voiced their anxiety during a Hari Raya Aidiladha gathering attended by Miri MP Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui on Saturday night.

The gathering also witnessed the presentation of bags of rice to widows from the village.

It was jointly organised by Kampung Lereng Bukit’s Village Development and Security Committee and Persatuan Pertubuhan Kampung Lereng Bukit.

Chin urged the relevant authorities and experts on hill slope stability to make recommendations for the peace of mind of the villagers.

“I understand your worries and anxiety on whether it is safe to stay or move out from the village. Some of you have been staying here for many generations. I will bring this to the attention of Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan who is also Natural Disaster and Relief Committee chairman,” he said.

Chin who is also Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water reminded villagers, particularly those living near hill slopes, to be alert to landslides during the monsoon season.

“Your life and that of your family are important. You have to decide whether to move out from the village if you feel it is not safe to stay. Better be safe than sorry,” he said.

He suggested that the village development and security committee collect data on the villagers including their properties (land and house value). They should bring them along for discussion  with  the relevant authorities and listen to the government’s recommendations.

Chin proposed that the committee get together to discuss the matter before mid-December.

Meanwhile, he urged the committee to be more active in identifying the hardcore poor for registration with the ‘e-kasih’ scheme.

Chin noted that many have not registered as they are unaware of the scheme to assist the hardcore poor through various government departments and agencies including the Welfare Department.
