Foochows urged to safeguard unity against unfriendly elements

KUCHING: The Foochows must remain united and work together against elements that could pose a serious threat to the existing unity in the community, said Environment and Public Health Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.Wong said the Foochows were peace-loving people who would not resort to bullying and badmouthing other Chinese communities.

“We also do not allow anyone among us to play around with racial sentiments causing others to dislike Foochows,” Wong said when closing the Foochow 21st Sports Carnival on Sunday.

The three-day carnival saw 1,700 Foochows from Sarawak, Sabah, West Malaysia and Singapore participating in games like basketball.

Among the notables was World Federation of Foochow Associations and The Federation of Foochow Associations Malaysia president Tan Sri Datuk Jimmy Lau.

Wong said the Foochows were fortunate to have a big brother in Lau who is known to be willing to come to the rescue of any fellow Foochow running into difficulty.
