More confirm participation in education fair

KUCHING: A total of 26 institutions have confirmed their participation in the Borneo Post International Education Fair 2010 (BPIEF).

The largest fair in Sarawak would be held on March 26-28 next year from 10am to 8.30pm daily at the Permata Exhibition Hall, Permata Car Park here.

“A total of 35 booths have been booked by 26 participants consisting of private and public higher learning institutions,” said organising co-chairman Dorge Rajah yesterday.

The organiser is targeting 100 booths.

Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department Datin Fatimah Abdullah has been invited to open the fair.

It is organised by Borneo International Expo Sdn Bhd (BIE) and supported by the Education Ministry and the National Association of Private Education Institutions.

“We will focus on higher learning institutions from outside Malaysia,” said organising co-chairman Michael Liong.

Liong, who is also BIE managing director, said they have had discussions with higher learning institutions from Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and United States and have received good responses.

“We are also looking into universities in China and Indonesian medical schools,” he added.

Liong also said that they have received a lot of positive support and feedback from schools outside the city wanting to come to the fair.

“We are also seeking for corporate sponsorship to help in the organising and education fund that would be handled by a special committee, not the organiser.

“We would also discuss with the corporate sector on the Company Adoption programme, whereby they would assist students in their studies and after they graduate they would be employed by the company,” he said.

Seminars and talks would also be organised by some of the participating higher learning institutions and the schedule would be released two weeks before the fair.

“With the fair to be held at the Permata Exhibition Hall, logistics and access would be easier for visitors especially those from outside Kuching.

“Being in the middle of the city, the place is easy to get to, and hotels and lodgings are within walking distance,” said Liong.

The rent for a booth ranges from RM2,300, to RM4,500, with the RM2,300 and RM4,500 booths already fully booked.

“The deadline for bookings confirmation would be Jan 26,” he added.
