Five institutes picked to conduct English language courses

TAWAU: Five Malaysian Institutes of Teacher Education (IPGM) have been picked to conduct English language courses for both existing and new teachers to ehance the effective teaching of the language in schools, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said the IPGMs were the English Language Teaching Centre Malaysia; the Datuk Razali Ismail IPGM campus in Kuala Terengganu; the International Languages IPGM campus in Kuala Lumpur; the Gaya IPGM campus in Sabah; and the Batu Lintang IPGM campus in Sarawak.

“Recently, the government announced the policy of dignifying Bahasa Malaysia usage and raising English proficiency (MBMMBI) to replace the policy of teaching and learning Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI).

“The change in policy does not mean that the English language is not important in our education system.

Rather through MBMMBI, the Education Ministry is increasing efforts to raise proficiency in English among students by upgrading the English language curriculum and producing quality teachers to teach English,” Muhyiddin said when officiating the Tawau IPGM campus here yesterday.

He said his ministry had made various efforts to enhance English teaching infrastructure in the IPGMs concerned including enhancing computer centres to be language laboratories and equipping IPGMs with current reference materials.

According to Muhyiddin, the government will place qualified and experienced teaching staff at the IPGMs to train both existing and future teachers and provide them exposure before they were sent to teach in schools.

“We will also reappoint English language teachers who will be retiring in July 2010 to serve as English teachers under contract if they meet the qualifying conditions,” he said. — Bernama
