Foreigners jailed for illegal entry

KOTA KINABALU: Seven foreigners were sent to jail by the Sessions Court here on Tuesday for illegal entry into the state.Patma Salahi, 52, Ruzaimin Osman, 39, Gibs Talib, 18, Jimmy Makkaplili, 30, Aman bakar, 32 and Hermanus Johnny, 24 were given three months’ jail, while Ubbin Saidil, 55, got 30 days.

In addition, High Court Deputy Registrar Marlina Ibrahim also ordered Ruzaimin, Gibs, Jimmy, Aman, and Hermanus to be given three strokes of the cane.

Patma and Ubbin were spared the whipping because they are above 50 years old.

The court imposed the sentence on all the accused after they pleaded guilty to separate charges under Section 6 (1) (c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 which provides for a fine not exceeding RM10,000 or a jail term of up to five years and whipping upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Niat Andy told the court that Ruzaimin and Patma were arrested by police at Taman Phuket here and Kepayan on Nov 11 and 25 respectively .

Prosecuting officer Jaesman @ Jaess Gipin from the Immigration Department told the court that Gibs, Jimmy, Aman, Hermanus and Ubbin were arrested by immigration officers in Ranau, Tuaran, and in the city between Nov 19 and 21.

The court also ordered all the accused to be referred to the Immigration Department for further action after completing their sentences for not having  valid travel documents.
