Insufficient fund for all study loan applicants: Shafie

KUALA LUMPUR: Insufficient financial allocation has prevented Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) from fulfilling all applications for study loans, the Dewan Rakyat was told yesterday.Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said Mara had given loans to 13,419 students out of the 19,457 eligible loan applicants this year.

“In 2008, some 37,846 people were given loans out of the 39,220 eligible applicants.

“It has been projected that in 2010, Mara will need RM1.998 billion to provide loans for students in the country and abroad. It is anticipated that the loan facility will benefit 86,871 students,” he said.

Mohd Shafie said this in a written reply to Lim Kit Siang (DAP-Ipoh Timur) who had wanted the ministry to state the current position of all Mara study loans approved in 2008 and 2009 as well as the allocation for forthcoming loans.

Mohd Shafie said that this year, Mara sponsored 76,534 students — 69,538 of them pursuing studies in the country and 6,996 abroad, which involved a sum of RM1.794 billion. — Bernama
