Old and new at song contest

KAPIT: ‘Oldies’ and modern songs will feature at the Inter-Team Mandarin Singing Competition to be held at civic entre here on Jan 30.A delegation from the youth wing of United Chinese Association (UCA) Kapit recently called on Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Economic Planning) Larry Sng at his Jalan Airport residence to brief him on the competition and invite him to be guest-of-honour.

Larry is also Assistant Minister of Industrial Development (Planning) and Assistant Minister of Social Development and Urbanisation in charge of youth development.

The group was led by the organising chairman of the competition, Chu Sing Luong and vice-chairman of UCA youth wing, Ling Hung Pin.

Chu said nine affiliated Chinese based non-governmental organisations in town are registered with UCA Kapit namely Tai San Ten, Chian Chuan, Foochow, Kwang Tung, Buddhist Association, Music Society, Tai Chi, United Chinese Women Association and Life Care Society.

Each of the association is to be represented by a team at the competition.

“The Inter-Team Mandarin Singing Competition offers attractive prizes namely UCA Kapit chairman’s Cup and Yong Hua Sying Inter-Teams Mandarin Singing Challenge Cup. The winners are to receive trophies and medals,” he said.

The competition is held to coincide with the Chinese New Year to attract a crowd, especially when many people working outside Kapit return home, he added.

Chu said it is one of the many activities organised by UCA to involve affiliated associations to promote friendship, understanding and cooperation in the spirit of 1Malaysia.

It is also to entertain, encourage healthy competition and enhance the standard of karaoke.

Inviting Larry, Kapit MP Alexander Nanta Linggi and community leaders to the occasion gives the people the chance to mingle with the community leaders.
