SHAH ALAM: Selangor MIC Youth has proposed that the monthly allowance of RM350 for the disabled in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur be raised to more than RM500 in view of the higher cost of living in the two territories.Selangor MIC Youth chief Shanker Raj Ayenger made the suggestion to Selangor Welfare Director Adnan Abu Bakar at a meeting that Selangor MIC Youth delegation had with him yesterday.
He also said that the MIC Youth in all 22 party divisions in Selangor would hold programmes to assist the Indian community in collaboration with the Selangor Welfare Department (JKM) and the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime Minister’s Department from January next year.
At a programme with the JKM and ICU last week in Kota Raja, some 800 Indian families which needed assistance from the JKM were registered, he said.
He said he hoped that the application for aid by these families could be approved immediately but the JKM said it would take two months.
Shanker Raj said many Indians were in need of aid and called for a review of the ineligibility of a family to obtain aid just because it owned a television set and enjoyed Astro programmes.
The Astro service payment was borne by the children of the families but their household income was below RM720, the poverty line set by the JKM, he said.
He said the MIC would go down to the ground, including estates, in Selangor to ensure that none of the poor was left out of the aid from the JKM. — Bernama
