KOTA KINABALU: The Housing and Local Government Ministry has completed 10 People’s Housing Projects (PPR) comprising 9,631 units in Sabah so far, its minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said.

The total was among 24 PPR projects comprising 18,289 units of houses which were either being implemented or would be implemented in Sabah by the National Housing Department at the cost of about RM1.2 billion, he said. “We still have 14 projects which are either under construction or will be constructed.

“Some will be completed this year and next year while others are still in planning stage,” he told reporters after visiting a PPR project in Kampung Kionsom, Inanam, here.

He said that the government was sympathetic towards the need to provide housing to the poor in Sabah but at the same time, it needed suitable areas for such projects.

On the 1,000-unit PPR in Kampung Kionsom, Kong said it was the first project in Sabah in which the ministry had to appoint a “white knight” contractor to revive the RM50 million project after the original one failed to complete it on       schedule.

“From the briefing, we are confident that this project can be completed on schedule (in August 2011),” he said.

Asked on the possible traffic congestion in the area as it was only served by a narrow one-way road, Kong said the state government was aware of the situation. He was confident that the related state agencies were taking measures to address the problem. — Bernama
