Consumers urged to boycott profiteering traders

MELAKA: Consumers are urged to boycott traders who raise food and beverage prices following the increase in sugar price of 20 sen per kg starting Jan 1.

Deputy Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Tan Lian Hoe said the ministry did not rule out the possibility of some food and beverage operators taking advantage of the situation by increasing the prices of food and beverages.

“There are instances where the price of a cup of ‘Kopi O’ has gone up from 90 sen to RM1. I hope consumers will avoid from going to these outlets,” she told reporters after visiting the Melaka Central Market and Tesco Hypermarket here yesterday.

The enforcement division of the ministry was monitoring the situation nationwide and stern action would be taken against those who raised their prices indiscriminately, she said.

She said the public should also take steps to reduce the sugar intake for a healthy lifestyle. — Bernama
