MIRI: The education of Lakiput children is viewed seriously by the Sarawak Lakiput Association (PLS).

As such, it will ensure that they get better access to it to succeed in life.

PLS president Simon Dayak Gelan pointed out that knowledge was the everlasting asset to make sure that they had better investment to keep themselves abreast with the other communities in Sarawak.

“So tonight’s gathering is to raise fund for the education of our children. We believe there is no better way than to provide them good education to determine their success in the field of knowledge,” he said at a New Year gathering-cum-education fund-raising dinner here Saturday.

The event organised by the association  was held at a leading hotel here.

A total of 33 deserving children received education incentives totalling RM4,200 at the function.

Twelve of them who excelled in UPSR received RM50 each; eight in PMR  (RM100); two in SPM (RM150); five in STPM (RM200) and six who obtained diploma and degree (RM250 each).

Dayak said the incentives were given as an appreciation of the students’ excellent achievement, and he hoped they would continue to strive for greater excellence in future examinations.

“The future of the Lakiputs is in your hands, so do not disappoint our community.

“We put our hope in all of you to ensure that our community continues to develop and progress and plays its part in the future development of the state, and the country as a whole,” he added.

On the association, Dayak said  it  was  started in  2005 to look into the  interests and welfare of the Lakiput (more commonly known as Kiput), particularly the less developed members, to improve their living and economic standard where possible.

“It is also our vision and dream to  see  that  the politics of development of the state Barisan Nasional will reach the various Kiput villages in Baram.

About 1,000 Kiputs from here, Baram and Brunei as well as people from other races attended the gathering.

Among them were Social Development and Urbanisation Minister Dato Sri William Mawan, Telang Usan assemblyman Lihan Jok and Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai.
