MIRI: Rural folk  in Sarawak will be provided with a different channel to get subsidised fuel.

Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui gave this assurance on the new law for subsidised fuel to be implemented in May.

A large number of rural folks own four-wheel-drive vehicles, needed to tackle rough terrain in remote areas, especially in northern Sarawak.

As pointed out by the Minister of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Datuk Seri Ismail Sabrie Yaakob, the new subsidy, based on the vehicle’s engine capacity, has not been finalised yet.

“The government will come up with a different channel for rural folk with big engine capacity,” he said addingthe move is to prevent non-Malaysian drivers enjoying subsidy meant for Malaysian citizens,” Chin said, adding that the federal cabinet will identify better ways to implement it.

Malaysians will have to produce their MyKad to buy the subsidised petrol while non-citizens pay more.

However not all citizens will get to enjoy the subsidised petrol as the subsidy will be given based on the vehicle’s engine capacity.

Chin said the recent announcement on the issue was only initial with a more holistic approach to follow when the system has been finalised by the government.
