SIBU: Lau Sing Yee was the  fairest   among  the  13  participants  when she was crowned the winner of the Sarawak Beauty Pageant Competition 2010.With that, she walked away with a grand cash prize of RM3,000.

The 19-year-old beautician was lost for words when met after the heart pounding event at the Civic Centre here on Sunday.

“I have participated in several beauty contests before but I’d never expected that I would be crowned champion last night.

“This is too good to be true,” said the soft spoken Lau, who found her winning hard to believe.

The thing about Lau was that, she entered the contest as contestant number 13.

Some people tend to believe 13 as an unlucky, but for Lau, it was her lucky star.

First runner-up Ella Yee  Siaw  Boon,  27, said she was  happy with her placing despite the fact she got better placing in her previous outings.

The sales and marketing executive took home a cash prize of RM2,000.

Ella standing at 171cm was among the tallest participants.

But the surprise of the evening came from Loh Ing Ting, 22.

Competing for the very first time, she grabbed the third place.

“I guess this must be a dream come true as I was merely tasting the waters,” said Loh, a manager by profession.

Wearing a blue evening gown, her smile and charm must have dazzled the judges, who had earlier on, torn their hair out in coming up with top three winners.

Loh, who speaks good English, took home RM1,000.

Earlier, the 14 beauty contestants battled it out to see who was the fairest among them all.

Round after round, they put in their best performance hoping to land among the top three rankings.

The battle of wits in the third  round  perhaps was the most challenging as several participants were hard pressed to come up with answers.

Among the questions asked included their views of life.

The spectators meanwhile, were from all walks of life.

Entertainment programmes were slotted in to entertain the audience.

Among those present was Minister of Environment and Public Health Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.
