PADANG BESAR: A man’s attempt to smuggle 23,100 digital video discs (DVDs) to Thailand through a short-cut route failed after the car he was speeding off skidded and overturned in a padi field in Kampung Sena, near here, yesterday.Perlis Anti-Smuggling Unit (UPP) commander DSP Zakaria Abdul Rahman said the car was being chased by UPP members in another vehicle, resulting in the mishap. He said the UPP team had earlier seen the man behaving suspiciously in the car when they were in the area at about 11.45am and when asked to stop, the man sped off and was chased for about two kilometres towards the border.

“After the 15-minute chase, the car went out of control, skidded and overturned into a padi field. The driver, believed to be a local, fled the scene.

“On checking the car, the UPP team found 24 boxes containing 23,100 DVDs of various titles, believed meant to be smuggled to Thailand,” he said when met at the Padang Besar UPP camp. The DVDs said to be worth about RM231,000 and the smuggler’s Proton Wira car which had no road tax were seized by the UPP. Earlier, Padang Besar UPP also seized 1,400 litres of petrol from a rubber holding in the Mata Ayer Felda scheme, near here.

Zakaria said following a tip-off, the UPP team found 38 containers of petrol at about 10.30am. — Bernama
