KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Datuk Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has proposed that a parliamentary committee be formed to monitor project implementation by the government. He said the committee would reduce debate on projects as it would ensure smooth project implementation and define the power of executive lawmaking bodies and the judiciary.

“Presently, most of the things brought up in parliament involve drains which are irrelevant while there is limited debate on the budget,” he said after a courtesy call by Theo Theophanus, the member of parliament for Victoria State, Australia, at his office here yesterday.

Wan Junaidi said he had sent a letter to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia on the committee’s proposal after parliament sesssion was adjourned in December.

With the committee, members of parliament could question ministries which did not implement projects approved by parliament.

It was time that Malaysia have more committees like in other countries which had committees on International Trade, International Bussines and International Economy.

Wan Junaidi said Malaysia which only has four parliamentary committees namely Public Accounts, Rights and Privileges, House and Rules was in need of ten more.

“If we have a committee on Rural and Regional Development, then the minister or senior officers can be summoned to answer queries on issues affecting the penan and orang asli.”

He added the proposal was still at discussion stage and would need approval from several parties. — Bernama
