Operation against taxis still charging old fare

PENANG: The Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) yesterday conducted an operation against taxis which have not calibrated their fare meters, at the Bayan Lepas International Airport, here.     Its Northern Region enforcement chief Nordin Yahaya said according to Puspakom, about 400 out of over 1,200 taxis in the state had not calibrated their meters and were still charging the old fare.

When contacted by Bernama, he said 20 CVLB officers checked 33 taxis and issued nine summonses to errant taxi drivers, including two for not calibrating their fare meters and six for not having the PSV licence, yesterday morning. The government had in August last year increased the taxi fare and ordered taxis to be calibrated accordingly.

Those which fail to do so are not allowed to operate.

Nordin said the 1,260 taxis in Penang were however given until June 30, 2010 to fix a printing machine for issuing receipts to passengers due to the high cost involved. “We will conduct our operation at strategic locations and action will be taken against taxis which do not abide by the regulations. “After June this year, it is compulsory for all taxis to issue receipts to their passengers,” he added. — Bernama
