MIRI: Projects under the Agriculture Development Council (MPPP) for P.219 Miri parliamentary seat will be identified and approved for implementation starting the second quarter of this year.Various related government departments and agencies, farmers and fishermen associations, and related quarters are expected to present their proposals in a meeting slated for March.

Deputy Resident (Planning and Development) Abdul Aziz Mohamad Yusuf, the second deputy chairman of the parliamentary income uplifting council, said the proposals from farmers, fishermen or livestock breeders would then be scrutinised before approval.

Miri constituency is currently represented by Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui, who was unable to attain the second meeting held at Miri City Council on Monday as he had to rush back to KL.

Chin’s political secretary Sebastian Ting, who was also at the meeting, said RM100,000 had been  allocated by the federal government through the Ministry of Agriculture to the constituency through MPPP.

This would be channelled into the approved projects aimed at uplifting income of the targetted groups in selected projects, Ting said.

Aziz, meanwhile, pointed out that there was a lot of potential to increase productivity of farms in Miri where there are supermarkets to assist in marketing of these fresh products.

Among the viable projects named are vegetables, fisheries and livestock farming such as goat-rearing.

“The government will assist, with the cooperation of the farmers, fishermen and livestock farmers,” he said.

The meeting, attended by 26 representatives, also discussed recent development of the ‘Subur’ programme.

“There are about 7,000 applicants under e-kasih programme in Miri Division, and we have 570 from the city in this list,” said Aziz.
