SIBU: State Democratic Action Party (DAP) publicity secretary David Wong yesterday took to task a secondary school here for allegedly disallowing a student to take the Chinese language as a subject. He said the mother of a Form 1 student had complained to him that the school had tried to stop her daughter from taking the subject.

Describing the action of the school as unreasonable, Wong said no school had the authority to disallow students to take any subject approved by the Education Ministry.

Speaking at a press conference, he said the student from a Chinese primary school had wanted to take the Chinese language subject but to no avail.

“It could be that the class of the Chinese language subject was already full,” he surmised.

Wong, who refused to disclose neither the name of the school nor the name of the student, said the student’s perseverance and her mother’s appeal to the school management board led the school to decide that the student’s standard in the subject be tested.

“From the test, the school had the verdict that she was not good enough to take the subject, Wong quoted her mother as saying.

In his opinion, the school authority had acted beyond its limit.

He said: “To my understanding, as long as the subject is allowed by the Ministry to be taught in that school no one, be it the principal or teacher can stop the students from taking it.”

“What happened doesn’t reflect the 1Malaysia spirit,” he said, expressing hope that the matter, which he believed was still hanging, would be resolved amicably soonest possible.
