Attempt to steal RM20,000 watch foiled

KOTA KINABALU: An attempt by a local man to steal a RM20,000 Rolex watch from a shop in Jalan Pantai here failed when the shop owner and members of the public apprehended him.

The 21-year-old suspect was caught red-handed by Chung Fatt Kee watch shop owner and public as he tried to flee the scene in the incident which occurred around 10.45am.

It was believed that the suspect came into the shop acting as a customer before snatching the RM20,000 Rolex watch that was on display.

“I placed five watches on the counter table while entertaining some customers.

“The suspect then came forward and asked to have a look at one of the watches. He looked suspicious so I did not show him the watch.

“As I went back to entertain my customer, he then tried to snatch the watch from the counter,” said the shop owner’s son identified as Chung.

Before the incident, Chung said he noticed the suspect wandering inside the shop for 15 minutes acting as a customer.

Chung also said the suspect showed him his wallet which was kept inside a plastic bag, as proof that he has money to buy the watch.

The suspect was apprehended by Chung, with help of members of the public, apprehended the suspect as he snatched the Rolex watch as tried to flee the scene. Police who were informed of the incident immediately arrived within minutes.
