Gloom turns to bloom for Lyn Yuen

KUCHING: After two days of gloomy weather, the sun shone brightly for up and coming Choo Lyn Yuen in the ITF 14 and Under Asian Championships (Grade 2) here yesterday.The Kuching-born 14-year-old not only retained her singles title but also blitzed her Singaporean opponent Joy Chia in a lopsided 6-2, 6-0 victory in the final.

Fourth seed Lyn Yuen was one of three Malaysians who made the last four on Tuesday.

She edged compatriot Alyssa Boey 7-5, 7-5 in one semi-final while Joy had no problems putting out top seed Arcnaah Rajan of Malaysia 6-1, 6-1 in the other.

Arcnaah won the third-fourth play-off (based on short sets) by beating Alyssa 0-4, 4-1, 4-1.

In the boys singles, Sri Lanka’s top seed Sharmal Dissanayake cruised to the title with a 6-1, 6-3 win over second seed Colin Wong of Malaysia.

Hussein Hasan of Yemen beat Sri Lankan Alexander Fairbanks 6-1, 6-3 in the boys play-off for third and fourth.

Lyn Yuen had a shot at another title when she paired up with Arcnaah against Singaporeans Rheeya Doshi and Joy in the doubles semi-final later yesterday.

The other semi-final saw Malaysia’s Tia Jia Wei and Alyssa against Oman’s Maliha Al-Awdi partnering Shaema Al-Olfi of Yemen.

In the boys doubles, Colin and Singaporean partner Rohan Kamdar were down to play Fairbanks and Myanmar’s Swe Kyaw Htin for a place in the final.

The Sri Lanka pair of Dissanayake and Nadaraja Nishangan faced Hasan and his Jordanian partner Seif Adas in the other semi-final.

The boys singles in the last four were completed before the skies opened up again around 2.40pm just as the last of the semi-final was completed.
