Warning of strong winds, rough seas until next Friday

KUALA LUMPUR: The Meteorological Department has issued a third category warning of strong winds and rough seas in the waters off Condore, Reef North, Pulau Layang-Layang and Palawan, and expected to continue until next Friday.In a statement yesterday, it said north-easterly winds of 60kph with waves reaching 5.5 metres, would pose a danger to beach and shipping activities, and oil platform workers.

A warning was issued over strong winds and rough seas of the second category, affecting the waters of Samui (Kelantan and Terengganu) and Tioman (East Johor and Pahang), Sabah, the Federal Territory of Labuan, Sarawak, Bunguran, Reef South, Sulu and Sulawesi.

Strong north-easterly winds of 50-60 kph and waves of 4.5 metres are expected to stay in these areas until next Friday.

The department has also issued an alert for thunderstorms in Sarawak (Mukah, Bintulu and Miri), Federal Territory of Labuan and Sabah (West Coast, Sandakan, Lahad Datu and Tawau).

They are expected to last until this evening.

The statement said small boats might face danger from 40kph winds and rough seas with waves of 2.5 metres.

Meanwhile, the department also forecast intermittent and occasionally moderate rain in Beluran, Tongod, Kinabatangan, Ranau, Kota Belud, Tuaran, Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Papar, Tambunan, Keningau, Tenom and Beaufort which was expected to persist until tomorrow.

Should the situation prolong, it could result in landslides and flooding in low-lying areas, it said. — Bernama
