KOTA KINABALU: The flood situation in six districts in Sabah is under control with rivers in several areas showing a decline in water levels, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said.The six districts are Kota Marudu, Kinabatangan, Kota Belud, Beluran, Telupid and Tongod.
Musa, who is also state Security Committee chairman, said the floods in Kota Marudu started on Thursday, while the floods in the five other districts started on Saturday following continuous rain.
“The Meteorological Department has forecast that intermittent heavy rain is expected to persist until today affecting Beluran, Telupid, Kinabatangan and Pitas and could cause flooding,” he said after attending the Chief Minister’s Department and Finance Ministry’s monthly gathering at the state Legislative Assembly Building here yesterday.
Musa said among the measures taken to help the victims was providing evacuation centres and ensuring that all forms of assistance, including food, were sufficient.
He said agencies and departments involved in rescue operations including police, the armed forces, fire and rescue department, Rela and district offices would continue to be mobilised in the flooded areas.
“All logistics requirements of these agencies are sufficient and are on standby to face any eventualities,” he said.
Musa said elected representatives had also been visiting the victims and providing assistance.
There are 2,425 people still in evacuation centres comprising 1,500 in Kota Marudu, 594 in Tongod, 77 in Kinabatangan and 254 in Kota Belud.
He reminded the people in the flooded areas to be on the alert and be ready to be evacuated when ordered by the authorities. — Bernama
