KOTA KINABALU: The Japanese government yesterday extended a grant assistance of RM115,370 for two water supply projects in the interior of Sabah. This brings the total grant assistance extended to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and local governments in Sabah to 25 projects amounting to RM2.7 million under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) initiative since 1989.

The grant for the two projects to establish gravity-flow water supply systems in Kpg Tintapon, Kota Belud, and Kpg Puhus, Tenghilan, will be channelled through Adventist Development and Relief Agency (Adra) Sabah.

A signing ceremony on the grant was held between the Japanese Consul-General here, Masashi Kono, and Adra Sabah chairman Nelson Guodoh Bendah.

Masashi praised Adra Sabah, which requested the grant, for its work to improve the living conditions and environments in communities in rural areas through developmental assistance in basic infrastructures, health, education and other service-oriented endeavours in Sabah.

“The government of Japan has extended similar grant assistance for the establishment of water supply system in four villages in the northern part of Sabah through Adra Sabah since 2004,” Masashi said.

Nelson said they would start the projects as soon as possible and were confident of completing them in the given time-frame of a year.
