PUTRAJAYA: Owners of vehicles with security systems will enjoy lower insurance premiums than those without security systems.Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the incentive was to reward vehicles owners who installed security systems to prevent theft.

“To this end, the Steering Committee of the Vehicle Theft Reduction Council headed by Bank Negara Malaysia will discuss and fix the Proportional Insurance Premium Policy,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

The discussions to be held next month will also involve the General Insurance Association of Malaysia (PIAM). The insurance tariff will be prepared by Bank Negara Malaysia.

Hishammuddin said Ops Lejang launched on Jan 1 to check motorcycle theft led to 658 arrests and seizure of 619 motorcycles and components.

Johor had the most number of cases with 170 followed by Kuala Lumpur (75) and Terengganu (69). Of those arrested, 119 had been charged in court.

Ops Lejang was launched after data showed that 32 per cent or 67,726 of the 211,645 cases in the Crime Index 2008 involved motornike thefts. — Bernama
