Many Sukma XIII coaches yet to submit names of athletes to sports council

KUCHING: Sarawak’s coaches for the 29 events in the 13th Malaysia Games (Sukma) should no longer delay the submission of their shadow teams to Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS).MSNS director Francis Nyurang Ding, who gave this reminder, said to date, many of the coaches had still not sent in the name lists for registration with Sukma Secretariat.

“Our dateline was actually January 26 but the Secretariat has extended it to February 15,” he said during a dialogue with the coaches and their assistants here yesterday.

According to him, the coaches can submit the line-ups now and should there be any changes, MSNS can always produce the new lists during the team managers meeting three days before the Games.

The state contingent’s preparedness and the roles of coaches and their relationships with MSNS, the athletes, their parents as well as the sports coordinators were also brought up during the dialogue.

“We are only 120 days from Sukma and I hope you all can plan carefully and put everything, including the equipment, training schedules and motivation camps, in place for the competition ahead,” he    said.

Nyurang also advised the coaches not to hold intensive training, especially for combat sports, two or three weeks before Sukma or let the athletes take part in competitions too close to the Games.

“During the last Sukma, I discovered one sports association bringing in an elite athlete two weeks before the Games and this athlete was also injured during a pre-Sukma competition,” he said, stressing that it was important to be fully prepared and not do things at the eleventh hour.

Other points Nyurang brought up were the contingent camp at UiTM in Kota Samarahan, team discipline, risk management, insurance coverage and the need for change.

Among those who gave presentations and briefings were MSNS sports officer Lucas Kalang Laeng and National Sports Institute (ISN) Sarawak Satellite Centre officer Joshua  Philip.

More than 70 participants, including officers from MSNS officers and ISN Sarawak Satellite Centre attended the dialogue, organised by MSNS.
