Two foreigners get four months’ jail, caning

MIRI: The Sessions Court yesterday sentenced two foreigners to four months’ jail and ordered that each be given two strokes of the cane for having entered the country illegally.The sentence was passed by Judge Musyiri Peet after the accused, Krisna, 25, and Mamom, 21, from Bangladesh pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 6 (1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Amended 2002) and punishable under Section 6 (3) of the same Act.

The Act provides for a jail term of up to five years and a fine of RM10,000, or both, as well as six strokes of the cane.

Both accused were arrested at 12.30am on Jan 24 at Eastwood Industrial Centre, Jalan Miri Bypass here.

The court also reserved Feb 2 to hear a case of another accused, Sohed, 25, from Bangladesh who pleaded not guilty to a similar charge.

The court ordered that he be remanded at Miri Central Prison awaiting his trial.

Separately, four Bangladeshis were sentenced to two months’ jail each for overstaying.

Mohammed Sharif, 30; Abdul Wadud, 44; Nazmul, 27, and Mohammed Duhal, 45 were charged under Section 15 (1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 (Amended 2002) which provides for five years’ jail or a fine  of  RM10,000 or both.

All four were arrested at the same time and at the same place.
