Kpg Sungai Bedil Besar wins ‘Friendly Neighbourhood Exemplary Village’ award

KUCHING: Kampung Sungai Bedil Besar was named ‘Kampung Contoh Kejiranan Mesra’ or Friendly Neighbourhood Exemplary Village for areas under Kuching North City Commission (DBKU).“Apart from that, the village had attracted the government’s attention in many ways, thus it has managed to get a piece of land costing RM50,000 for a community centre.

“On top of that, in a visit by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak recently, the federal government has awarded the village RM400,000 to build the centre,” said DBKU Mayor Mohamad Atei Abang Medaan in his opening remarks at DBKU headquarters in Petra Jaya here yesterday.

Atei said the village success was as a result of its many activities like organising ‘gotong royong’, efforts to increase the villagers’ economy through various entrepreneurship programmes as well as establishing ‘Smart Partnership’ with various agencies.

“I commend the efforts by Kampung Sungai Bedil Besar’s Kejiranan Mesra (KJM) committee members for their relentless efforts in making the village a role model.

“I urge all other villages within the DBKU jurisdiction to be more innovative in their efforts not just for awards, but also for government allocations, aid and grants,” stressed Atei.

He pointed out that for the government to award financial allocations for various programmes and projects to develop villages, the KJM of each village had to prove that programmes organised were effective in developing the people.

Atei said Kampung Sungai Bedil Besar managed to get the attention of the federal government, which earned them the allocation to build their community centre.

“Villages must show their relentless efforts and dedication in making whatever programmes organised a success. DBKU acts only as a vehicle to guide KJM. Efforts and success of programmes depend on your dedication and effort.

“You have to think outside the box and be unique as well as innovative,” added Atei.

Kampung Sungai Bedil Besar KJM chairman Ahmad Mansor said success would not be possible if not for the general cooperation among the villagers.

Ahmad revealed that more programmes would be organised for the village, one of which would be a Small-Medium Entrepreneurship programme slated for May 7-9.

“This programme is specially organised for the women where they would showcase their products like food items, crafts and many more,” he said.

Ahmad also revealed that an expert would be invited to give talks during the programme.

Also present during the function were KJM advisor Ghani Abone, DBKU deputy director Jumaini Haili, DBKU administrative officer (Community and Entrepreneur Development Unit) Morshidi Ahmad.
