Edaran Modenas chairman, Dato’ Syed Mohamad Syed Murtaza, is confident that the target can be achieved as last year’s penetration stood at 22 per cent, representing some 6,000 units of Modenas motorcycles.

He also said Sarawak was one of the highest market share contributors in the motorcycle industry last year.

“Last year alone, 26,000 units of motorbikes including Modenas, Honda and Yamaha were sold in Sarawak. A little bit of calculation tells the total sales of billions in ringgit.

“The market for motorbikes is going slightly up nationwide; 50,000 units of Modenas models were sold throughout the nation last year and this marks 12 per cent of the total industry sales,” he told a news conference before Batu Kawa assemblyman Tan Joo Phoi opened GH Motor World Sdn Bhd at Jalan Batu Kawa here Sunday evening.

Syed Mohamad added that Modenas aimed at selling 70,000 units this year, which would be about 15 per cent of the nation’s market share.

The latest Modenas CT100, officially launched in February this year, was a more economy model with a bigger fuel tank of 5.3 litre, he said.

He expected this new model, which was targeted at age group between 18 and 25 to hit 300 units of monthly sales in the state.

“Youngsters with sporty and daring attitude are more likely to fancy Modenas CT100.  So far, 260 units have been sold throughout Sarawak.”

He said the new model was priced at RM3,848 and RM4,048 (electric starter) per unit.

It is made to understand that there are more than 1,000 motorcycle dealers in the state.  In Kuching alone, over 500 outlets are offering motorbike sales and services.

In his opening speech, Tan advised motorcyclists to maintain their machine as well as to practise courtesy on the road.

“Motorbike users have to be more careful and courteous when they are on the ride.  Respect the speed limit and never drive under influence,” he said.

Tan, who is Padawan Municipal Council chairman and incoming Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department, lauded GH Motor World for offering quality services and products.

“I can observe that GH Motor is very customer friendly; the staff are approachable and the outlet is neat and clean,” he said.

Also present were GH Motor World Sdn Bhd director Frankie Lau and Kuching Bicycle and Motor Traders Association chairman Lu Kim Yong.

GH Motor World Sdn Bhd is located at Lot 4778-4779, Block 218 KNLD, Jalan Batu Kawa.
