CYBERJAYA: A Broadband Action Brigade has been set up to help achieve the government’s target of 50 per cent broadband penetration in the country by the end of this year, Information Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said yesterday.

He said the team, set up under the ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), comprised five people — the ministry’s secretary-general, MCMC chief executive and technical personnel who would identify any problem and overcome it immediately.

“All complaints from the people will be acted on swiftly and reported to the ministry. This is to ensure that the schedule announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is met in a short time,” he told reporters after launching the National Spectrum Consultative Committee at the MCMC, here.

Dr Rais said the complaints would be sent to his office and the MCMC office daily so as to ensure that every problem that cropped up was resolved.

“We are emphasising that the cost be always at an affordable level, the service be of quality and delivery is not delayed.

This is the priority because we will be distributing laptop computers to school children, village committees, penghulus’ offices and Information Department centres nationwide,” he said.

Dr Rais said some of the complaints were from the district councils and states over delayed approval of licences for installing communications towers and grouses from the public on unavailability of telecommunications lines.

“We will meet every week to discuss the states having problems. Every month, we have to set a target and the team will help us achieve the 50 per cent broadband penetration by December,” he said. — Bernama
