National cyclist dies after training fall

IPOH: National cyclist Nurfarahdini Zakaria, 27, was killed after a fall during training with the Royal Malaysian Navy team in Lambor Kiri near Seri Iskandar, about 60km from here yesterday.

Central Perak OCPD Supt Mohamad Fakri Che Sulaiman said Nurfarahdini succumbed to her injuries at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital here two hours after the incident at 10.20   am.

Nurfarahdini, a navy personnel, was among the national women cyclists who participated in the Laos SEA Games last year together with Masziyaton Mohd Radzi, Nurul Ahmar Badeuzzaman and Kimbeley Yap.

Her coach Mohd Salmiza Salleh said Norfarahdini, who was training with five male cyclists, started cycling from the Lumut naval base at 7.30am in preparation for the Malaysian Tour 2010 on April 27.

He said she lost control of her bicycle while trying to avoid hitting another cyclist who had earlier fallen from his bicycle.

She was taken to a clinic nearby but was later transferred to Changkat Melintang Hospital.

“Norfarahdini, who was unconscious, was then taken to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh but pronounced dead at 12.30pm,” he said.

Salmiza said Norfarahdini’s remains would be brought to her hometown in Pasir Mas, Kelantan last night.

Meanwhile, the navy’s team chairman Commander Ismail Osman said during the incident, the team were carrying out an ‘interval’ training session at the     speed of about 50km per hour.

He said the session was a routine training for the team. — Bernama
