Policeman gets 18-month jail, RM10,000 fine for RM300 bribe

IPOH: A police sargeant was yesterday sentenced to 18 months’ jail and fined RM10,000 by the Sessions Court here yesterday for accepting a RM300 bribe five years ago.Judge Azhaniz Teh Azman Teh handed down the sentence after finding Megat Ahmad Megat Jaafar, 55, guilty of the offence.

Megat Ahmad, who is attached to the Narcotic division of the Sitiawan police station, had accepted the bribe from one Rosli Baharom in return for a favour, which was to inform Rosli’s family that the man was detained by the police.

Megat Ahmad, who has been with the police force for 34 years, committed the offence at Jalan Sultan Idris Shah, Manjung, at 1.35pm on July 7, 2005.

However, Azhaniz Teh allowed a stay of the sentence pending an appeal and set bail at RM5,000 in one surety.

Megat Ahmad, who was represented by lawyer Abdul Roni Rahman, posted bail.
