Three Indonesian timber workers to be jailed, caned

SIBU: Three Indonesian workers of a timber camp in Song were yesterday sentenced to jail and ordered to be caned for having entered the state without valid travel documents.They pleaded guilty before High Court deputy registrar M Rajalingam who sat as Sessions Court judge.

Ardian Daud, 28, was sentenced to four months’ jail and shall be given three strokes of the cane while Syamsir Nasir, 26, got six months and four strokes.

Martin Baun, 21, was sentenced to four months’ jail plus three strokes of the cane.

A police party led by Inspector Shazrin Nizam arrested them at their workplace about 10.15pm on March 18. Subsequently, they were detained under Section 6 (1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/1963 (Amendment 2002) for not possessing valid travel documents.

Police investigation revealed that Ardian had entered the state at the end of last year through Tebedu from where he headed for the timber camp where he worked as an attendant.

Syamsir was brought into the state by his mother in 1994 when he was 10 years old. He did not have any personal identification document.

He went to the timber camp from Bintulu in July 2008 and worked as an excavator operator.

Martin entered the state through Intikong in August last year and went to the timber camp to work as a lumberjack.
