Four more records tumble, Miri tighten grip

KUCHING: Four more records tumbled on the second day of the Sarawak Schools Sports Council (MSSS) Track and Field Championship at State Stadium yesterday as Miri bagged seven more gold medals to tighten their grip at the top of the table standings.Miri broke two records while Kuching and Limbang broke one each.

The Oil Town have now collected 14 gold, 16 silver and eight bronze medals to lead the pack with 220 points.

In second place with 14 golds, six silvers and 14 bronzes with 171 points are Kuching while Sibu have nine golds, nine silvers and 12 bronzes and 166 points for the third place.

Sarikei are fourth with three golds, six silvers and five bronzes, followed by Limbang, Samarahan, Kapit, Bintulu, Betong, Sri Aman and Mukah.

Meanwhile, yesterday’s new records were created by Miri’s Loo Li Jun and Kee Siew Lian, Limbang’s Vanyesia Lilau Janda and Kuching’s Mohd Shahizzad Shahrazi.

Li Jun set a new record of 33.36m in the Girls Under-15 discus to erase the old record of 30.92m while Siew Lian, who won the Girls U-18 long jump, rewrote the old record of 11.01m with a new distance of 11.50m.

Shahizzad bettered the 56.1s record he set in the MSSS Kuching Track and Field Championship last month when he crossed the tape in the Boys U-14 400m with a new time of 54.1s.

The old meet record was 54.3s. Vanyesia slashed 0.09s off the old meet record of 15.29s when she won the Girls U-18 100m hurdles with a new time of 15.2s.

The four new records have brought the number of records broken in the championship so far to eight.

Sixteen more golds are up for grabs today on the third day of the championship.

The event is aimed at selecting the best athletes to represent the state at the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) Track and Field Championship in Johor from May 18-22.

Organised by MSS Kuching Division, the event is participated by 1,111 athletes from 11 divisions.
