Youngsters leading state challenge at dancesport championship

KUCHING: Sarawak are sending 14 dancesport athletes to the Malaysian National Ranking Dancesport Championship 2010 to be held tomorrow at The Grand Perdana Ballroom, Bukit Jalil Golf & Country Club, Kuala Lumpur.They are Russell Lim Jian Liang and Alexis Jap Hsiao Tding; Randell Lim Xiu Zhen and Ashton Lim Suelee; Lim Sian Chung and Chong Li Wen; Eric Lai and Stella Chung Whye Mun; Voon Jien Yen and Elleen Chang Wan Loh; Voon Choon Yen and Poh Sze Hui as well as Jap Zhen Chin and Voon Rou Yi.

The championship is organised by Malaysia Professional Dancesport Council (MPDC).

Spearheading the state challenge in the Grade A National Ranking events in both Standard and Latin American categories are 17 years old Russell of SMK Kuching and partner Alexis, 20, together with Randell, 15, partnering 18 years old Ashton Lim Suelee.

Both the Sarawak Grade A pairs are looking forward to do well in the championship in their bid to earn berths in Team Dancesport Malaysia.

Based on their current form, the pairs should impress especially in the standard category.

Meanwhile, Sarawak Dancesport Association chairman Chester Lim disclosed that for the upcoming championship, apart from the Grade A events, the other five pairs will compete in the Grade C, Grade D and Junior Standard and Latin American categories.

Lim is confident that the Sarawak youngsters should perform well.

Lim, who is the MPDC secretary general, explained that aspiring national Grade A Dancesport athletes will vie for places in the national team – Team Dancesport Malaysia – via series of national ranking events and disclosed that dancesport is a medal event at the Guangzhou Asian Games 2010.    Lim also added MPDC is a affiliated to the Asian Dancesport Federation, International Dancesport Federation, Asian Professional Dancesport Council and International Professional Dancesport Council.
