Civil servants advised to report corrupt colleagues

SIBU: Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Service (Cuepacs) is urging civil servants to report colleagues whom they know are involved in corrupt practices. Its president Omar Osman said yesterday the congress was rather focused this year on curtailing the number of corrupt civil servants.

“We’ve discussed with the Malaysian Anti-corruption Commission (MACC) on ways and means to prevent corruption among civil servants,” he told a press conference at a hotel here.

According to him, the number of civil servants involved in corruption cases last year was rather high.

“We have set out to halve the number this year,” he said, reiterating the need for civil servants to help report their corrupt colleagues to MACC.

“Civil servants should cooperate with the MACC to prevent corruption. Let those who give bribes be arrested for their act,” he added.

Besides integrity, the Cuepacs president exhorted civil servants to increase their productivity and improve their work quality.

He stressed: “If we want salary increment, we should work for it. We should reduce wastage, increase our performance and improve our discipline. Then only can we ask for the salary increment.”

It was also Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s idea that salary increment should commensurate with productivity improvement.

The salary scheme should be reviewed in line with the new economic model, he added.

Omar also thought it was proper that the government cut down the number of skilled foreign workers and contract workers.

“Cuepacs has also discussed with the Public Services Commission Malaysia (SPA) to explore the possibility of getting all civil servants to enjoy the permanent status and with pension by the end of the year,” he said.

He said all civil servants should rightly be of permanent status.

On job vacancies, Omar quoted SPA as saying that there were presently 50,000 jobs in the government departments waiting to be filled.
