MIRI: Sarawak PAS has  continued its war of words over what the party says are problems faced by Saberkas night market hawkers. Its state vice-Youth chief Mohammad Arifiriazul yesterday slammed Parti Pesaka Bumiputera  Bersatu  (PBB) Piasau  Youth  chief  Affandi Jawawi for saying the issue should not be politicised.

Mohammad repeatedly said Pakatan Rakyat (PR) was simply highlighting issues faced by the hawkers to ensure such complains were addressed by the Miri City Council (MCC)

“The statement made by the PBB Piasau Youth chief is just to deny issues raised by the hawkers there, without going to the ground to see the problem,” he told The Borneo Post.

Mohammad said so far, Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai had only said that the night market was not a permanent site for trading.

“This is not a political issue, but merely highlighting the plea of traders for a better trading place,” he said.

On a blocked drain at the night market, Mohammad said, traders had highlighted the problem for the last four years but the authorities had failed to remedy the problem.

According to him, the authorities took photographs of the drain but until today there has been no follow-up by the Miri City Council or Miri Bumiputera Traders Association (PBMS).

“We hope the local council can provide a better trading area with proper toilets, drainage system and parking bays for traders and patrons,” he added.
