KUALA LUMPUR: Uber Cup debutants Sannatasah Saniru, 20, and Tee Jing Yi, 19, who both answered a last-minute call-up to the national squad due to injuries suffered by Lydia Cheah and Julia Wong, hope to overcome their nerves with a determined performance.

“This will be our first appearance in a major tournament and we were overcame by nerves when called up to replace Lydia and Julia but I will do my best when playing second singles,” said Sannatasah when met at Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara here yesterday.

Jing Yi said she would be happy to contribute a point when Malaysia take on their Group A opponents United States and China.

“Winning against opponents from China, South Korea and Japan may be difficult since I lack experience but I am happy to be in the Uber Cup squad,” said Jing Yi who was initially listed as a reserve.

Coach Tey Seu Bock said though both players would enter the courts as underdogs, they had potential, especially after having played in international tournaments.

Sannatasah had represented the national team during the Laos SEA Games last year and was part of the team that won the gold medal in the team event.

Apart from the duo, Wong Mew Choo (singles), Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty, Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Ho, Goh Lui Ying-Ng Hui Lin (doubles), make up Malaysia’s Uber Cup squad. — Bernama
