Twelve teams to slug it out in tennis championship

BINTULU: Twelve teams are gunning to clinch the men’s team title at the 6th Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) General Manager Tennis Championship which kicks off today at Kidurong Club here.

Defending champions Asean Bintulu Fertilizer 7 will be the favourites to defend their title this year.
However, last year’s runners-up Tanjong Lobang of Miri, as well as third-placed BDA Max and Sibu Division Lawn Tennis Association, will pose some threat for the defending champions.
Other competing teams are MLNG Petronas, PSKPP (Sports and Cultural Association for The Education Services) Bintulu, Kastam Mix, Sokanjaya, New Edition, Bintulu Port, Sibu Gaox and Binda.
The champions will take home RM1,000, a challenge trophy and sports equipment.
Runners-up and third-placed winners will take home RM800, RM500 and trophies respectively.
Meanwhile, in a welcoming dinner for the players held at Kidurong Club on Wednesday, BDA assistant general manager for environment Dr Hamli Biha advised all the athletes and officials to compete in the highest sportsmanship spirit and display top notch performance throughout the tournament.
The objective of organising the championship is to popularise tennis amongst the populace in Bintulu and state. The tournament ends this Sunday.
