Taib says state polls’ date will not be influenced by any feng shui elements

KUCHING: Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud has dismissed a rumour milled by local feng shui ‘experts’ that the state election would be held in October.Taib, who is also the State Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, said: “If I want to dissolve the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) I will tell you (media) then, but please do not read too much into rumours.”

According to some feng shui ‘experts’, Oct 10 2010 in short form is 10/10/10 and that would make for a good nomination date. If the election falls on Oct 20, 2010 this would correspond to the four-digit ‘2010’ and these digits represent this year.

Taib said as he himself was not yet inspired to think about the next state election this should be more the reason why people should not believe in rumours.

“There is no truth to all these,” he said.

The next state election is due latest by early next year.

When asked to comment on the just concluded Sibu by-election, Taib said it was a fair one.

He also said that he personally accepted the BN defeat and respected the people’s choice.

He said the BN would hold a post mortem and identify reasons for their loss.

However, he insisted that the Sibu result would not reflect the overall support of the majority of the people towards the BN.

Wong Ho Leng from the DAP won the Sibu by-election by a 398-vote majority. Wong garnered 18,845 votes while Robert Lau Hui Yew of the BN collected 18,447 votes and Independent candidate Narawi Haron obtained only 232 votes and lost his deposit.

Earlier, SUPP Sibu chairman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said the post mortem would be held after the current DUN sitting. The DUN sitting started yesterday and ends next Wednesday.
