Cyclists ride for their ‘rights’

ABOUT 200 cyclists pedalled along the streets of Kuching to remember families, friends and all those injured or killed by motorists on public roads. Dubbed the ‘Ride of Silence: Kuching Chapter’, the event saw city cyclists of different ages and from different backgrounds ride their two-wheelers — road, mountain, downhill, tandem and even folding bikes — in solidarity with their counterparts worldwide to drive home the message that cyclists too have a right to use public roads.

Organised by Zikri Mohamad Mortadza andReuben Wee, the cyclists gathered at Jalan Haji Taha at 8 o’clock on a cool Wednesday night (June 2) to make the ‘47.5km bike march’ around Kuching in a ‘slow cautious’ procession (less than 20kph).

“Most showed up after reading of the event on Facebook weeks earlier or through word of mouth from fellow cyclists,” Zikri revealed.

While some adopted a solemn approach, others simply delighted in the sheer camaraderie of the huge turnout to the two and a half hour ride.
