PENANG: The Penang Social Security Organisation (Socso) is projecting that 2,400 new employers will be registered with the organisation this year.State Socso director Othman Mohd Nordin said the target was made based on existing statistics, which showed a two-fold increase in employer registration early this month.

“The increase indicates a positive effect from the operation codenamed ‘Ops Kesan Perkeso’ which began nationwide in early June,” he told reporters after briefing enforcement personnel who will be conducting operations on employers who have not registered at the Bukit Jambul Complex, here yesterday.

He said the month-long operation would identify employers who flout the Employees Social Security Act (Socso) 1969.

He added that the efforts hoped to create awareness among employers on their responsibility and worker’s rights in obtaining social security protection in Malaysia.

Othman said throughout 2009, a total of 1,231 employers were registered, 72 compounds worth RM32,000 were issued and 28 employers were charged and RM1.2 million had been received in contribution arrears.

“On June 2 and 3, Socso visited 88 employers, of whom 19 had failed to register themselves and their employees and a total of 11 compounds were issued,” he said.

He said until April, the Penang Socso had paid RM4 million in benefits to contributors and processed 1,340 disability accident cases. — Bernama
