Kylie toast of Kuching Age Group

KUCHING: Kylie Teo stole the limelight at the Kuching Division Table Tennis Association (KDTTA) Age Group competition held at Taichi Centre, Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho here yesterday as she won two titles and finished second in another category.

The primary six student from SK St Teresa edged Chung Hua Primary School (CHPS) No. 6’s Alice Chang 3-2 in the Girls U-13 final to lift the title.

Andrea Tan (CHPS No. 2) was second while Chang Wui Lee (CHPS No. 3) came in third.

In the Girls U-15, Kylie was also a class above the rest of the field. She overcame an older opponent from Chung Hua Middle School (CHMS) No. 1 Ting Ying Hii 3-1 in the final.

Runner-up and third-placed winner were Chong Ching and Molly Bong from CHMS No. 1 respectively.

Only Sukma XIII paddler Wendy Lau prevented Kylie from capturing her third title in the Girls U-17.

The 17-year-old from SMK Green Road lived up to her state player’s billing by thrashing her younger opponent 3-0 in the final last Saturday.

Coming in third and fourth respectively were Ting Ying Hii (CHMS No. 1) and Goh Siow Ping (SMK Green Road).

Girls U-10 champion was Alice Chang (CHPS No. 6) who beat Andrea Tan (CHPS No. 2) in th final. Joan Chung of CHPS No. 1 came in third while Sim Yu Qi from CHPS No. 6 was fourth.

In the Boys U-8, Joel Chen (CHPS No. 2) was the champion, followed by Alan Teo (SJK Chung Hua Batu 32, Serian), Louis Chang (CHPS No. 4) and Chai Chang Fook (SJK Chung Hua Batu 32,  Serian).

The Boys U-10 title was won by Gabriel Ling from CHPS No. 3 who beat his schoolmate Derrick Tsai 3-0 in the final. Third and fourth were Roydan Kho (CHPS No. 2) and Bryan Jong (CHPS No. 6).

It took Clement Sim (CHPS No. 3) six sets to overcome the state Boys U-13 singles champion in 2009 Jason  Siaw from SMK Kuching High 4-2 in the Boys U-13 final.

Clement was the Boys U-10 singles champion at the Malaysian Hopes Championship in 2008.

Brainard Kho (CHPS No. 2) was third after he beat Gabriel Ling (CHPS No. 3) in the play-off for third/fourth placing.

Chai Kiang Ann from SMK Kuching High was the champion of the Boys U-15 while the runner-up was Andy Jong from SMK Sungai Maong.

Third and fourth placings went to Gilbert Ling (CHMS No. 1) and Jason Siaw (SMK Kuching High).

The competition that was played on two weekends saw more than 50 students from 11 primary schools and eight secondary schools in Kuching and Serian taking part.
