Diana wins Ladies Amateur Open

KUALA LUMPUR: Teenager Diana Tham clinched her first major tournament by winning the Malaysian Ladies Amateur Open (MLAO) tournament at the Mines Resort and Golf Club, Seri Kembangan near here yesterday.

The 18-year-old Sabahan’s victory came when she won the one-hole play-off, following a tie with compatriot Kelly Tan after the last hole.

Both players scored five-under 208 after three rounds in the tournament which began on Tuesday.

In the final, Tham carded a one-under 71 while Tan shot two over 73.

“I was nervous, pressured, even during the play-off, I was shaking.

“But I told myself (that) this is all for experience and I just hit the ball, do what I have to do,” said Tham who least expected to win the title.

Sixteen-year-old Tan finished second while defending champion Michelle Koh settled for third spot.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Team One comprising Tan, Koh and K Dayanitha won the team event.

Malaysian Ladies Golf Association Royal Patron Tunku Ampuan of Negeri Sembilan Tuanku Najihah Tunku Besar Burhanuddin gave away the prizes. — Bernama
