The team will comprise of 10 boys and 10 girls from Wushu Lion and Dragon Dance Federation of Sarawak’s (WFS) school development programme.

Seven events — changquan, nanquan, taijiquan, daoshu, qiangshu, gunshu and jianshu are competed in the Under-12 category while 10 events including taijijian, nandao and nangun are included in the Under-18 and Under-15 categories.

“The MSSM wushu championship which is aimed at selecting the best exponents for the national junior squad, is replacing the National Junior Wushu Championship,” WFS secretary James Ting said yesterday.

He said Sarawak had the advantage over the other teams because the state has a good development programme and enough pool of exponents.

“Only exponents who train under coaches of state affiliates of the Wushu Federation of Malaysia are eligible to compete in this event,” said Ting, adding that students aged 18 and below can participate in the inaugural championship.

Ting said the national body had written to the Education Ministry on this ruling and had gotten verbal agreement from the ministry.

“The Wushu Federation of Malaysia are still waiting for an official letter on this matter,” he said.

All events are competed based on international standardised routine.
