Create ‘home ambience’ at workplace — Wong

SIBU: Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has urged civil servants to treat their workplace as their second home.

He believed that when they managed to create a “home ambience” in the office, they would be able to perform with greater efficiency and dedication.

“If you take your job as a chore, you will certainly not be satisfied. But if you build an affection, like in your family, at work you will find the home feeling,” he said when officiating at the 8th anniversary of Sarawak Society Nursing Association (PJMS) here on Saturday.

For nurses, he suggested they form a community among themselves to create that home feeling.

“You (nurses) spend many hours a day together. This is almost equivalent to the time that you spend at home,” he reasoned.

Wong also reminded nurses to be caring, approachable and efficient as their core duty was to look after the sick.

Wong, who is also Minister of Environment and Public Health, said there are presently 262 clinics throughout the state.

He later handed over a grant of RM5,000 to the association for them to organise their activities. Among those present were state matron Margareth Wong, Sibu Hospital director Dr Chin Zin Hing and organising chairman Sanggu Kasi.

The gathering also saw Wong presenting the ‘Exemplary Community Nurse 2010’ to Teresa Ngu Lang Hua (for the public health category) and Morni Umar (hospital category).

Teresa has 34 years of experience in nursing, and is well versed in handling children with special needs. Currently, she is working in Lau King Howe Memorial Children’s Clinic, Sibu.

Morni has 29 years of experience as a nurse. She has been active in the diabetes association, is an active PJMS member, and is regularly involved in health campaigns organised by the Sibu Hospital.
