KOTA KINABALU: All Fire and Rescue Services Department stations, including those in Sabah, will be standardized in the Tenth Malaysia Plan (10MP).

Deputy Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Lajim Haji Ukin said prior to this, all fire stations in the country were different, in terms of size.

He said the proposal had been approved and the standardization would start during the 10MP, where all fire stations would be constructed in accordance with the prescribed design.

“Before this, the construction of fire stations did not have a certain standard and there were differences between one region to another.

“But after this, the construction will be coordinated and standardized,” he said at a press conference during the department’s presentation of Fire Medal Award, Outstanding Service Award, certificate of retirement and the closure of Innovative and Creative Circles Convention (CIC) state level, at the Promenade hotel here yesterday.

Twenty six fire and rescue officers received the fire medal award, followed by 52 fire and rescue officers for the outstanding service award, while 10 officers received their retirement certificate during the ceremony.

Also present were Fire and Rescue deputy director general Datuk Wan Mohd Nor Hj Ibrahim, Sabah Fire and Rescue Department director Khirudin Drahman and Sabah Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Mohd Yusof Gunnos.

Lajim, however, said the coordination and standardization would still follow the categories of fire stations that were set previously.

There are three categories of fire stations in Malaysia: Category A, B and C,  whereby Category A is for big cities, Category B for districts and Category C for smaller stations.

Lajim said the size of the new station building, under the 10MP, would be under Category A.
